When is a proof reader not a proof reader?
When that proof reader is also a copywriter.

As a copywriter with more than 20 years of experience, I offer a proofreading service which is second to none. As well as picking up on all the things you'd expect from a proof reader - spelling errors, grammatical gaffes etc - I also have a keen understanding of what makes a piece of writing impactful and persuasive. I know how important tone of voice is in relation to a defined demographic, how a particular phrase will ring true with one customer but not with another. I can warn you when your copy may be in danger of losing its audience.

If I'm proofreading the copy for a website, I can make suggestions regarding the potential addition of Google-friendly key phrases, and advise you on how your copy might be restructured for ease of online reading.

As a proof reader, I bring to bear precisely the same knowledge, experience and skills as I do in my capacity as copywriter. I just can't help it.

All that being said, I know my place. If you request my services as a proof reader, then a proof reader is what you'll get. I won't step on toes or engage in debates over matters of opinion relating to the quality and content of the copy I'm checking. I'll just make a few take-it-or-leave-it suggestions that may give your advertisement, brochure or website an additional advantage in a highly demanding marketplace.
