What is an SEO Copywriter, and Why do You Need One?

The internet is critical to the success of any modern business, and SEO (or Search Engine Optimisation) is critical to the success of any internet marketing strategy. An optimised website is far more likely to appear in those all-important top 10 Google search results than one that isn't. In fact, a website that hasn't been optimised is very unlikely to appear in the top 100, let alone the top 10. Given that most people will only browse through the first couple of pages of search results, it's vital that any commercial website is fully optimised.

There are a whole host of technical activities that can contribute to the optimisation of a commercial website, but the two most crucial elements are inbound links and keyphrase-rich content. Any SEO operation worth its salt will furnish a website with a profusion of inbound links. Content is another matter.

Google loves fresh, original, relevant content. And when Google talks about content, it means copy. Google has little time for pictures, flashy graphics and multimedia. Google loves words, because words are information and information, ultimately, is what Google is all about.

Many SEO operations may advise some rather innovative approaches to amassing that all-important content. One such method is called 'scraping' which effectively steals copy from other websites and places it on your own. The other is the purchasing (usually for less than peanuts) of 'articles'. Both methods are soon to be rendered extinct. Google has already patented and is well into the development phase of its 'Similarity Engine'. This will identify duplicate copy (even copy that has been cleverly edited) and treat it as irrelevant. In worse case scenarios, Google may even punish the offending website by sending it to the dreaded Sandbox (Google's equivalent of the naughty step), which can have drastic results for any business reliant upon its website for commercial purposes.

The only way to ensure fresh, original, relevant content on a website, is to write it. Or have it written for you by a copywriter or, more precisely, an SEO copywriter.

The insertion of crucial keyphrases into copy, isn't difficult. It certainly doesn't require an experienced copywriter or an SEO copywriter. The skill is in writing keyphrase-rich copy that reads as if it was composed not purely for Google's various crawling robots, but for a human being. And not just any human being, but that most important of human beings, the Customer. The trick is in the rhythm and the pacing of the copy, something which requires a copywriter's 'ear'. It is amazing how many times even the most cumbersome keyphrase can be included on a web page if the flow of the copy can be maintained. That 'ear', that sense of pacing and rhythm, is something I've developed over the many years I've been working as a copywriter. And even though a large proportion of those years there was no such thing as an SEO copywriter, the techniques I developed during those internet-less years has proved invaluable in enabling me to provide an exemplary service as an SEO copywriter.
