When is a Proofreader Not a Proofreader?

When that proofreader is also a copywriter.

As a copywriter with 20 years of experience, I offer a proofreading service which is second to none. As well as picking up on all the things you'd expect from a proofreader – spelling errors, grammatical gaffes etc – I also have a keen understanding of what makes a piece of writing impactful and persuasive. I know how important tone of voice is in relation to a defined demographic, how a particular phrase will ring true with one customer but not with another. I can warn you when your copy may be in danger of losing its audience. If I'm proofreading the copy for a website, I can make suggestions regarding the potential addition of Google-friendly key phrases, and advise on how your copy might be restructured for ease of online reading.

As a proofreader, I bring to bear precisely the same knowledge, experience and skills as I do in my capacity as copywriter. Frankly, I just can't help it.

All that being said, I know my place. If you request my services as a proofreader, then a proofreader is what you'll get. I won't step on toes or engage in debates over matters of opinion relating to the quality and content of the copy I'm checking. I'll just make a few take-it-or-leave-it suggestions that may give your advertisement, brochure or website an additional advantage in a highly demanding marketplace.

If you want to work with a proofreader who never stops being a copywriter, then call me on 0790 661 2111 or email me at mail@michaelsellars.com.
